Staying Crypto-curious

This blog was initially written for and published on the Wachsman blog.

The following is a guest post by Wachsman Summer Intern Brooke Tanner.

As the demand for emerging tech professionals grows, claiming the top spots of LinkedIn’s Most Promising Jobs of 2019, so too does the demand for PR professionals who can understand what in the world they’re talking about. However, not all publicists are going to be expected to have prior knowledge in niche tech spaces. And when it comes to blockchain and cryptocurrency, a relatively young industry, the chances of a communications professional having a wealth of background is highly unlikely.

Knowing this, how has the Wachsman team propelled itself to the forefront of the industry? How have communications experts prepared themselves to become experts in the emerging world of blockchain and cryptocurrency?

Layla Tabatabaie, Account Supervisor, says she “would experiment by sinking in $20 USD or some small amount and purchase a cryptocurrency, following the team behind the product and tracking their roadmap progress while pegging the movements to greater market trends. The blended method will help bring the words I read to life.” Layla never made an investment without first seeking out every credible cryptocurrency publication she could find.

Decrypt, an online news and educational source, is an office favorite for learning the key terms related to the constantly changing and ever so challenging industry. It not only provides recent news coverage on all cryptocurrencies, but it also features a “learn” tab where both the crypto-curious and seasoned enthusiasts can brush up on key terms, ideas, and projects.

McKenna Smith, another Summer Intern, shares, “alongside reading Decrypt almost religiously, I made sure to follow all of Wachsman’s clients, as well as crypto trade publications and thought leaders in the industry on social media. Seeing what they have to say about cryptocurrency and blockchain technology helped me understand the industry more and more every day.”

While it might seem like cryptocurrency is a small space, there are thousands of individuals constantly sharing their thoughts and ideas on advancements in the industry. Luckily, CryptoWeekly has compiled a list of the “100 most influential people in crypto” in 2019, many of whom McKenna follows on her crypto-dedicated Twitter account.

Although reading up on the news and following the executives of leading crypto projects can seem like the best way to learn the industry, most Wachsman staff would agree they have gained the most knowledge from their peers. Destin Walton, Event Executive, shares: “My definition of crypto before my interview was, ‘internet money.’ Once I got to Wachsman, then Account Coordinator Adam Badrawi, now Senior Account Executive, was a major resource. I would go to him with all my crypto-related questions and he always had an answer.”

Having a diverse group of individuals with different backgrounds and varying passions fosters a continuously curious attitude at Wachsman. Whether it’s sought out or just included in a daily news roundup, new and exciting information on the industry constantly circulates around the office.

It’s no question the blockchain and cryptocurrency space is young, exciting, and at times, confusing. Despite this, PR professionals are expected to keep reading, learning, and asking questions. Luckily, the Wachsman team comes prepared with a variety of resources that never fail to pique our crypto curiosity.
